The accreditation scheme concentrates on the standards of knowledge and professionalism in this sector to ensure landlords keep completely up to date with all legal requirements and offer their tenants the best possible service and support.


Digs joined the original voluntary scheme. Since then, it has become a legal responsibility on all landlords. Rent Smart Wales – Key facts

1. Landlord Registration:


  • All landlords who rent properties in Wales must register with Rent Smart Wales.
  • Registration includes providing personal details and information about the rental properties.
  • Registration lasts for 5 years and must be renewed.


2. Licensing for Landlords:


  • If a landlord manages their own property (handling things like viewings, maintenance, and rent collection), they must also apply for a landlord license.
  • To be licensed, landlords must complete approved training on their responsibilities.

  • Training covers key topics like landlord responsibilities, tenancy management, property standards, and legal compliance.


5. Enforcement and Penalties:


  • Failing to register or obtain a license can result in penalties, including fines and rent repayment orders.
  • Tenants have the right to challenge landlords who do not comply with Rent Smart Wales requirements.


6. Tenant Rights:


  • Rent Smart Wales aims to protect tenants by ensuring that landlords and agents are well-trained and comply with the law.
  • Tenants can check if their landlord or agent is registered and licensed through the Rent Smart Wales public database.
